The Amusing Bible English

In his anti-Catholic books “La Bible amusante” (The Amusing Bible) Taxil satirically pointed out what he considered to be the inconsistencies, errors and false beliefs presented in the Bible. The first version of “The Amusing Bible” (~400 pages) was illustrated by Frid’Rick and published in 1882 by the “Librairie anticléricale” in Paris. An extended version of “La Bible amusante” — the complete edition of 1903-1904, 814 pages with 400 illustrations by Frid’Rick — was published by the “Librairie P. Fort” in Paris. The extended version opened with Taxil’s public letter addressed to Pope Leo XIII and, as its cover announced, gave the textual citations of Holy Scripture together with the refutations opposed by Voltaire, Fréret, Lord Bolingbroke, Toland and other critics.

Gabrielis Antuanas Žoganas - Pažesas - 1854-1907 - Leo Taksilis. Išgarsėjo savo literatūriniais veikalais, kandžiai pajuokiančiais religiją ir bažnyčią. Jaunystėje jį auklėjo jėzuitai. Jam buvo atviras didžios bažnytinės veiklos kelias, bet jis paliko savo mokytojus bei auklėtojus ir ėmė energingai demaskuoti jų šventeiviškumą, melagingumą ir veidmainybės kauke pridengtą savanaudiškumą. Tai buvo tikras pokštininkas, kuriam pavyko apmauti ne tik aukštus katalikų bažnyčios dvasininkus, bet ir popiežių.
