Léo Taxil (1854–1907) was a French anticlerical satirist and the author of the Diana Vaughan hoax, a twelve-year practical joke on the Catholic Church. In La Bible amusante (The Amusing Bible) he retold the Bible with heavy irony, pointing out what he held to be its contradictions, errors and absurdities. The first edition (1882, about 400 pages) has 400 drawings by Frid’Rick, printed large (140 × 110 mm), each with a short caption. The complete edition of 1903–1904 (about 814 pages) prints them smaller (102 × 80 mm), opens with Taxil’s open letter to Pope Leo XIII and quotes Holy Scripture verbatim beside the refutations of Voltaire, Fréret, Lord Bolingbroke, Toland and other critics. Here the drawings come from the edition of 1882, the text from the complete edition of 1903–1904.
